Judging by the Cover: Passport Power and Perception

0

It is often said that “A book cannot be judged by its cover.” However, this saying seems irrelevant to individuals from third-world and developing countries. Their passports are often judged solely by their covers, as these nations generally hold low rankings in global passport indexes. Consequently, citizens from such countries are required to apply for visas, often burdened with piles of documents, to prove that they are financially capable of traveling to developed nations.

It is undeniable that developing countries have their share of millionaires, billionaires, and middle-to-high-income families who can easily afford international travel. Yet, even when granted visas to so-called developed countries, they frequently face further scrutiny upon arrival. Immigration officers subject them to a barrage of questions, which many perceive as unnecessary harassment. While some view this as unwarranted discrimination, others argue it reflects the toxic and biased perceptions harbored by developed nations toward the developing world.

On the one hand, the process to apply visa is expensive for developing countries; from booking appointments, visa fees and service fee, and cost related to prepare exhaustive documentations. On the other hand, citizens of developed countries enjoy privilege such as visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to various countries. The disparity in how passports are valued globally is not merely an administrative issue—it reflects a deeper socioeconomic inequality. Passports from countries with higher rankings, such as North America or Europe, serve as a gateway to opportunity, while those from lower-ranked countries are seen as a barrier to entry. This unfairness reinforces stereotypes, further downgrading individuals based solely on their nationality rather than their qualifications or intentions.

However, security and immigration control are important, but the psychological toll of such treatment should not be underestimated. Many travelers from developing countries feel humiliated or stereotyped, even when they have the financial means and legitimate reasons for travel. This imbalance raises questions about fairness and whether international policies should focus more on the individual rather than the collective reputation of their home country.

Do you think you really know what a Self-Love is?

Self-love is the term I first heard when I was just a teenager from a 90’s Hollywood Romcom. In the movie, the lead actress’s mother talks about Self-love to the sulking actress who recently broke up with her high-school sweetheart. From that movie I learned: when you buy expensive stuff or go to a salon to get fresh manicure or even go to a fancy restaurant for an extravagant meal then that means self-love. I learned self-love is something that you do which brings joy to you. So, I started indulging myself buying expensive clothes and perfume, eating fancy meals and pastries and obviously partying all the time in the name of self-love. All these things were bringing joy to my life, so I thought I was practicing self-love but oh boy I was so wrong!

In my late twenties, I finally understood the real meaning of self-love so let’s begin by asking ourself – what is self-love?

Self-love is a simple but yet a complex term, misunderstood by so many ~ thanks to all the movies out there. Self-love is a practice of loving oneself both physically and mentally. It means accepting and appreciating your own worth, treating yourself with kindness and setting boundaries and taking care of your own needs and happiness without putting others first. It also means forgiving yourself for mistakes and embracing your imperfections and celebrating your strength.

Now let’s talk about how we can practice self-love in a day-to-day life. A good and basic example of practicing self-love can be as follows:

1)        Doing oil pulling after you wake up ~ promotes your oral health in a long run

2)        Going for a morning or evening walk for at least 10 mins ~ reduces Serotonin, reduces cortisol (stress causing hormone) and improves overall health

3)        Doing daily 15/20 mins exercise and meditation ~ improves one’s physical and mental health

4)        Practicing positive affirmations throughout the day ~ helps build up positivity and self-confidence and reduces stress

5)        Journalling ~ writing daily key points, highs and lows and reflecting on those points

6)        Engaging in your hobby

Above are a few examples of self-love. In today’s busy era, it is necessary to practice self-love in order to keep sane and to live life peacefully and happily. It is also necessary for us to teach our younger generation the meaning of self-love so that they can start practicing it from an early age.

I hope now you know the meaning of self-love and I hope you will start practicing it, if you haven’t already. Peace!

It occurs up to 48 hours after hospital admission. It can cause by any organisms like bacteria, virus, and fungus. The National Healthcare Safety Network with Center for Disease Control (CDC) for surveillance has classified hospital acquired infection into 13 types, with 50 infection sites. The common site of infection includes urinary tract infection, surgical and soft tissue infection, meningitis, and respiratory tract infection.

Route of transmission

The most common route of hospital acquired infection is through contact where organisms’ transmission occurs with direct or indirect contact. Droplet transmission can cause from respiratory tract by large droplets, such as influenza. Airborne transmission usually occurs from respiratory tract by small air droplets such as measles, tuberculosis and SARS virus.

Example of hospital acquired infection

Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs): The catheter is place in a large vein to provide food, medication, and to draw blood for routine blood test in Intensive care units. The central line veins have access to major veins close to heart. If microorganisms enter through the catheter to central vein, it may cause fever and red skin or soreness around central line in the patients. CDC suggest to avoid touching the tubing and encourage patients to speak up with health care provider that what prevention measure are taken by healthcare provider to prevent CLABSIs.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI): This is the most common hospital acquired infections in health care if patient having prolonged use of urinary catheter. Microorganism enters through catheter to urinary tract causing Urinary tract infection (UTI). The burning sensation in lower abdomen or while peeing are main symptoms of UTI. The infection can happen any party of urinary system-like bladder, kidney or ureter. This kind of infections are preventable and can be treated with an antibiotic.

Surgical site infections (SSI): This occurs at the site of body part where surgery is done. The infection can occur in skin, tissue, organ, or at the place where implants like knee, steel rod is placed inside the body. It is important to understand how to take care of your wound in post-surgery and must not touch your wound with dirty hand. SSI is treated with antibiotics. In worst case if the infection is deep, patient might need re-surgery to treat SSI.

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP): This infection develops in the patient who is in ventilator. The infections develop in the lung when bacteria enter into patient lungs. This can be treated with antibiotics

In conclusion, hospital acquired infections are common in healthcare with high morbidity and mortality. Both patients and health care worker awareness play a vital part to minimize the infection rate. Nurses play crucial role to prevent the transmission of infectious microorganism to the patient as they are in the front line while treating patients. Center of Disease Control has infection control guideline and recommendation to prevent hospital acquired infections.

Porter’s 5 force Analysis Explained

The Porter’s Five Forces model is an analysis tool to identify where power lies in a certain business situation by using the outside-in perspective. This is used to recognize industry structure to determine company strategy and action plan. It is essential to understand the level of competition within the industry so that company survives in market with long term profitability.

The competitive rivalry analyzes how intense the competition is in market. It considers number of existing competitors and their capability in marketplace. When rivalry competition is high there will be an impact on business bottom line. This either because of price war or massive investment in sales & marketing for product promotion. The supplier power analyzes how much power a supplier has and how easy for them to drive up prices. It is obvious that fewer the suppliers, the more power they have.  Therefore, business will be in better position if there are multiple suppliers. The buyer power of customer examines how easy it is for the buyer to drive down price and their effect on product pricing and quality. If there are plenty of seller, it will be easy for customer to switch. In addition, bargain power of customer is low when they purchase the product in small volume. The threat of new entrant examines how easy of difficult is for competitor to join the marketplace. The market share will be decreased if there is easier for competitor to enter the market. The threat of substitution will examine how easy it is for customer to switch from a one product to the competitor product. The number of competitors, their pricing strategy, product quality, marketing activity etc. are crucial. Most importantly, it also studies the competitors profit even if they lower the price.
